How Does Google Search Query Work? Google's Secret Revealed

Category: , By Mikrotik-Master

You must be thinking at times, how Google is able to give out the correct or the required result in such a short span of time? I myself use to ponder over it for a long time.

Let me explain you the process behind the search result delivered in Google.

The life span of a Google search query normally lasts less than half a second, yet involves a number of different steps that must be completed, before results can be delivered to a person seeking information.

How Google spider crawls:

In Google, the web crawling (downloading of web pages) is done by several distributed crawlers ( called Googlebot). There is a URL server that sends lists of URL's to be fetched to these crawlers. The web pages that are fetched by the Googlebot are then sent to the store server. The store server then compresses and stores the web pages into a repository (a kind of storage facility). Every web page has an associated ID number called a doc ID that is assigned whenever a new URL is parsed (analyzed) out of a web page.

The indexing function is performed by the indexer and the sorter. The indexer performs a number of functions. It reads the repository, uncompress the documents, and parses (analyzes) them. Each document is then converted into a set of word occurrences called hits. The hits record the word, position in the document, an approximation of font size and capitalization.

The indexer distributes these hits into a set of "barrels", creating a partially sorted forward index. The indexer performs another important function. It parses (analyzes) out all the links in every web page and stores all the important information about them in an anchor file. This file contains enough information to determine where each link points from and to, and the text of the link.

The URL resolver reads the anchor file and converts relative URL's into absolute URL's and in turn into doc ID's. It puts the anchor text into the forward index, associated with the doc ID that the
anchor points to. It also generates a database of links that are pairs of doc ID's.

The links database is used to compute page ranks for all the documents. The pages that get into the barrel first will be most likely to be included in the search results. The question is, how does Google decide which pages go into the barrel first? The answer (as some of you probably would have already guessed) is based on the fact that the doc ID is an integer.

How To Monitor And Manage Your Google Rankings

Category: , , , , , , By Mikrotik-Master

Keeping track of where your website ranks on Google for important keywords and keyword phrases can be a full time job. Although many tools exist for monitoring search engine position, properly evaluating SEO performance requires a disciplined approach.

There are a variety of ways to measure search engine rankings for your website. Popular website tools like SEO Elite and Web CEO include search engine ranking tools that can track where your site ranks for identified keywords. But what if you don't own SEO software?

To evaluate search engine rankings, you simply need a means of measuring rankings on a regular basis. Follow these simple guidelines:

Create and maintain a spreadsheet of your rankings. Having a document that you continually update can help you see weekly changes as well as trends over time. Be sure to keep it updated at least once a week so that you are always aware of how you rank for keywords and keyword phrases you are watching.

You can choose your keyword list based on the keyword phrases you've selected as important, those your competitors rank well for, or individual phrases identified by SEO software. If you want to get a jump start, you can identify which keyword phrases your site is ranked for in the top 20 on Google using SEOdigger.com. This tool provides a listing of which keyword phrases your site ranks within the top 20 Google search results for and can be a great tool to identify your competitor's keyword rankings.

Record changes in search engine result placements simply by entering each keyword term in to Google or using SEO software. You can also find free tools online to report your rankings like CleverStat or GoogleRankings.com.

Continue to make changes, build links, and record your results. This step will never be completed but rather is an ongoing process. You should strive to become number one on all your SERPs and get so far ahead that none of your competitors will be able to compete. This requires constant and never ending consideration to building links and creating more and more reasons for other sites to link to you.

Consider reciprocal linking, link acquisition, as well as adding free tools to your website, valuable content, and helpful downloads. Access to these tools is ideal if you want to attract links to your website. Once you've added these valuable tools, make sure to let others know that they exist. Consider a free press release, email campaign or promotion.

Expand your keyword list. As you improve your overall rankings on major search engines, consider adding other keywords phrases that may be relevant to your website, products or services. Focusing on an expanded keyword list can result in more traffic and broader appeal.

Monitoring and managing your search engine rankings, especially on Google is necessary if you wish to increase the organic traffic to your website. This begins with basic monitoring and evaluation of your rankings on key search engines. Once you've developed your spreadsheet, update your rankings each week with free tools or SEO software. Continue to focus on your rankings and developing inbound links through free tools and resources on your site as well as proactive link requests. Over time, as you improve your rankings for key terms and phrases, expand your list. Improving your rankings is a never ending process, but an important one. Stay the course and you'll experience the results you're looking for.

Google Update January 2008

Google just updated last week. For most web sites nothing special happened but for others Google took away some of their precious page rank on their web site or blogs. I am not talking about one or two point page rank reductions, this Google Update took (and the last one as well) took away 3 points or more. And in some cases a few sites lost all their Page Rank.

Some of the harder hit web sites were Renkoo, Del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia where I saw some users that are in my network loose all their Pageranks. Renkoo lost two points on its main page (dropping from a PR7 to a PR5) and most of the users I know lost at least one point on their blogs. The worst was on Delicio.us where a CEO's linking blog went from a page rank five to zero, this reduction also happened to a few other people on other networks as well. The best for me was one of my local competitors lost out as well, dropping from a PR 7 to a PR 4, on his main web page.

What happened? Google made things tougher in most cases (except Renkoo who did it to themselves). Having a web site or a social network without a strong sense of what SEO is all about is like saying I want to have zero defensible competitive edge. Having an Strong sense of SEO could have preserved Renkoo's former Page Rank at seven or improved it upwards. For a few bloggers the reductions came because they (like Renkoo) were asleep at the wheel.

Maintaining a strong position in Google (and thus your defensible competitive edge) requires constant work, vigilance, and a keen eye for detail. Think of working on your web page like just like doing work on a race car, sometimes you have to go into the pit for either gas or tires. A lot of people's web sites just ran out of gas while on the track. So just like racing, make sure you stay on track, don't fall asleep at the wheel and keep a good SEO guy on your team.
